Ten Ways 2 Show Kids You Care

Actively engage your FIRE students every day in some way SOCIALLY, in addition to academically.  Choose one or two items below to use this week with each FIRE student.

  1. Notice them.
  2. Smile a lot.
  3. Acknowledge them.
  4. Learn their names.
  5. Seek them out.
  6. Remember their birthdays.
  7. Ask them about themselves.
  8. Look in their eyes when you talk to them.
  9. Listen to them.
  10. Play with them.
Wear FIRE shirts on first day of FIRE weekly!

First Weeks of FIRE

There is no travel during the first (2) weeks of FIRE.  FIRE teachers and crew leaders should use this time to interact extensively with the FIRE students.  Getting to know everybody and enforcing FIRE class expectations will make the rest of the semester go more smoothly.

F Teacher – student introductions
F Introductory and bonding activities
F Holding students accountable –reward system
F Q & A on general FTHS topics
F FIRE class expectations, rules, guidelines
F Seating assignments, travel procedures
F Materials check:  agendas, binders, etc.
F Tutoring – introduce concept of peer tutoring
F Getting used to the flow of the FIRE class

Help Develop Assets in Your Students

Developmental Assets are positive experiences and qualities - positive things all young people need to grow up healthy and responsible - that all of us have the power to bring into the lives of our students. 
External Asset Category 1 - SUPPORT
Young people need to be surrounded by people who love, care for, appreciate, and accept them.
·         Family support
o    High levels of love and support in family life
·         Positive family communication
o    Communicates positively, student seeks advice and counsel from parent(s)
·         Other adult relationships
o    Receives support from 3+ non-parent adults
·         Caring neighborhood
o    Caring neighbors
·         Caring school climate
o    School provides a caring, encouraging environment
·         Parent involvement in school
o    Parents actively involved in helping student succeed in school
